Wine Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni A total knock out, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is deep, inky and explosive, with superb energy to back up the pure power in the glass. The most intensely mineral and savory of the Realm Cabernets, the 2013 Farella Vineyard offers up a compelling mélange of graphite, sage, menthol, tobacco and inky blue/purplish fruit. Like all of the 2013s, the Farella has plenty of medium-term appeal, but with an extra edge of tannin underpinning the fruit. I would prefer to give the 2013 at least a few years in barrel to fully come together, as the acidity and tannins are searing at the moment. The cool climate of Coombsville is a good foil for the Realm style.
94 points Antonio Galloni- Black cherry, plum, cloves, smoke, new leather and licorice meld together in the 2012 Pinot Noir. Ample, rich and dramatic in the glass, the 2012 is all about power and intensity. This explosive Pinot from volcanic soils is explosive from start to finish. The 2012 was aged in 60% new oak, all of which it handled with grace. 94+ points. ohn and Lorraine Alban have done a magnificent job with their 2012s. I tasted both wines just after they had been bottled, but that did not seem to be too much of an issue. The 2012 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are both terrific, but perhaps more importantly, they represent a significant step up from the 2011s, which suggests North has a bright future. Readers should expect ripe, textured wines built on volume and resonance.

The Bien Nacido Vineyard lies at the Northern end of Santa Barbara County on elevated bench lands in the Santa Maria Valley, just 17 miles from the Pacifi c Ocean and buffeted by the Sierra Madre Mountains. SOIL Loamy soils with good drainage. Strong oceaninfl uence on climate. PRODUCTION TECHNIQUE The grapes were hand-sorted, gently destemmed, and cold soaked for a few days before fermentation. 48% of the fruit was fermented in oak barrels, while the rest was fermented in open top tanks. After fermentation, the skins were pressed off in a basket press. The wine was then aged for 11 months in 100% French oak barrels. BOUQUET Leads with aromas of fresh red berries and dried herbs, supported by hints of toasty oak and vanilla. TASTE Rich and smooth with a balanced acidity, featuring strawberry fl avors upfront, followed by notes of herbs and vanilla. FOOD PAIRING Beckon Bien Nacido Pinot Noir is an ideal match for roasted white meats, lamb and meaty fi sh, as well as a variety of soft and fresh cheeses like brie and ricotta
