Cakebread Cellars Merlot is dark garnet in color, reflecting its rich fruit character. Subtle aromas of blackberries, black tea leaves, dried herbs and vanillin are followed on the palate by fresh plum and cherry flavors offset by notes of black pepper and cassis, carrying into a touch of French oak on the finish.
The earlier picks gave us tangy red fruits and dark sour cherry, while the later picks delivered rich blackberry fruit and deep supple textures. The result is a Merlot redolent of Mandarin Orange peel and red cassis, with incredible layers and a balance of vibrancy and deep textural richness. We love this interplay as it walks a fine line between the overt and the subtle, delivering a wine of immense complexity.
From the winery "Like a hidden mountain lake, our seldom seen 2012 Merlot is deep with dark pools of sappy ripe fruit, and wild with brushwood and brooding earth. Choked with huckleberries and laden with cola, clove and oak spice, you're pulled to the depths before resurfacing on a wave of native acidity. We invite you to take a dip. 100 cases produced."
From the Winery- The 2012 Merlot is medium dark ruby in color with clean aromatics of ripe plums and cherries layered with light touches of spice and sweet French Oak notes. Truly a yummy Merlot across the mouth it is soft and silky, truly a seamless wine. Nice purity of flavors here with an exciting flavor profile, lively but with a nice finish. I love the mouth feel and ripeness we were able to get from our vineyard in 2012. This is an easy wine to love. 96% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvigon,1% Petit Verdot
91 points Stephen Tanzer-Bright ruby. Powerful cherry, floral pastille and sassafras scents, along with notes of cracked pepper and musky herbs. Sweet and penetrating, offering juicy blackberry and cherry compote flavors that pick up a smoky quality with air. Closes smooth, spicy and long, with supple tannins coming on late and folding smoothly into the wine's sweet dark fruit.
