Sassicaia is arguably Italy’s most famous bottle of wine, and its maker, Tenuta San Guido, is Italian wine aristocracy. Sassicaia and its Super-Tuscan revolution changed the face of Italian wine — and it catapulted Tenuta San Guido into the highest echelon of wine producers. Today, Marchese Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta continues in his father’s footsteps even as he prepares to hand over San Guido estate to his son, Sebastian Rosa. Over the years, Tenuta San Guido expanded its vineyards to encompass 190 acres, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the estate expanded its lineup to include “second” wine Guidalberto and entry-level Le Difese. Le Difese, debuting with the 2003 vintage, does the work of the estate’s “everyday” wine, but when Tenuta San Guido makes it, the “everyday” wine is still a reason to celebrate. Tenuta San Guido’s outstanding Le Difese bottling add even more luster to Italy’s premier Super-Tuscan estate.
Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese, this has enticing aromas of cassis, black tea, violet, and wild herbs. Savory and elegantly structured, the medium-bodied palate shows ripe blackberry, star anise, and a hint of coffee bean framed in lithe, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Smooth and composed in the glass highlighting traces of small berried red fruits such as currants, raspberries, pressed blueberries, and wild myrtle. A lot of white almonds dominate the secondary scene blending with hints of linden and green olives. Medium-bodied, slightly rustic tannins but well-matured and integrated and a juicy, shining finale. Please be aware that extreme cold or heat can cause damage to wine. If temperatures in your area are below freezing or above 80 degrees for a sustained period of time, please advise us to hold your wine until the weather is milder, or to upgrade to an expedited shipping method.
Your wines will be shipped by us in perfect condition and any damage incurred due to weather is not covered by the shipping company insurance, or guaranteed by us. We will gladly store your wine in our temperature-controlled cellar until the weather is more suitable for shipping.
Due to the increasing difficulty of shipping wine & spirits, shipments may take longer than expected, and expedited shipping methods are not available. We apologize for any inconvenience.
