Scarecrow is one of the top Napa Cabernet Sauvignon’s and a standard bearer for the ultra-collectable Cult Californian wine. This goes toe to toe with the best Cabernets in the world, including fellow Napa legends Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate, as well as the finest in Bordeaux, being likened to the illustrious Château Margaux.

Only around 2,000 cases are produced each year, and like all top Californian wines, most of the production is sold to their devoted, hugely oversubscribed mailing list. Supervised by the well-known and much-admired winemaking consultant Celia Welch, the Scarecrow estate “continues to turn out some of Napa’s most profound Cabernet Sauvignons” – Robert Parker (Wine Advocate).

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the historic vineyard in Rutherford AVA, thought to be the oldest vines left in Napa, with some going back to 1945.

Moving to the Grand Vin 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, red wine simply doesn't get any better, and I never cease to be amazed at what winemaker Celia Welch accomplishes with this incredible terroir. Deep ruby/plum-hued, with a kaleidoscope-like array of cr me de cassis, jammy blackberries, spicy oak, graphite, and smoked tobacco, with a kiss of background chocolaty nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and a flawlessly layered, concentrated, balanced profile that has to be tasted to be believed. Given its wealth of fruit and texture, as well as purity and balance, it already offers pleasure, yet smart money will give bottles 4-6 years in the cellar, count themselves lucky, and enjoy bottles over the following two decades. The 2021 Scarecrow is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard on the western edge of Rutherford, nestled back against the Mayacamas range. Boasting a fabulous nose of deep, dark, black cherries and earthy-spicy notes accented by a touch of mocha-like oak, this full-bodied wine is ripe, rich and velvety. There's ample density and concentration, but the wine still retains a sense of freshness on the long, elegant finish.

One of the more fabled wines in Napa Valley, Scarecrow is based on a 25-acre vineyard in western Rutherford, nestled up against the Mayacamas. Today, the property is owned by Bret Lopez, grandson of movie executive J.J. Cohn, who originally purchased the acreage as a summer retreat for his family. The oldest existing vines were planted at the request of neighbor John Daniels (Inglenook) in 1945, who guaranteed Cohn he would purchase the fruit.

About one-third of the vineyard is dry-farmed, including those old vines planted on St. George rootstock, referred to at the estate as, "The Old Men." According to winemaker Celia Welch, "In a great vintage, they're unparalleled. In some vintages, other blocks may outperform them because of modern trellising and access to irrigation."

Cuttings from those old vines have been grafted onto an adjacent parcel, now referred to as, "The Young Men." Vineyard management is handled by Mike Wolf.
