A Stanford cardiovascular surgeon and world-renowned inventor, Thomas Fogarty took up home winemaking in the early 1970‰۪s in a small cabin on the current winery site. He planted his first grapes in 1978, and in 1981 founded Thomas Fogarty Winery and Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Winemaker Michael Martella met Dr. Thomas Fogarty in 1980 and he has been there since day one. A graduate of U.C. Fresno, he helped Fogarty open the winery in 1981, plan its construction and develop the estate vineyards. Nathan Kandler, another U.C. Fresno graduate, is associate winemaker. The first vintage was in 1986. The Fogarty Estate Vineyards, located in Woodside, consist of 325 acres 25 of which are planted on steep southeast- and east-facing hillsides to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with small amounts of Merlot and Sangiovese. The 100 acre Gist Ranch Estate is located 14.5 miles south of the winery. Fourteen acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. The vineyards are all planted on loam over sandstone, shale and marine deposits. Additional fruit is sourced from some of California‰۪s most respected grape growers.
