Favia Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 750 ML

1 bottle in stock.

Favia Wine was founded by noted viticulturist Annie Favia and her husband and wine maker, Andy Erickson. Andy’s first winemaking job was with John Kongsgaard at Newton, and then Bob Levy of Harlan scooped him up to assist at BOND. Later, he became the winemaker at Ovid, Arietta, Screaming Eagle, and Dalla Valle. Annie’s viticultural work began with David Abreu, shepherding Napa’s Grand Cru vineyards for Harlan, Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Sloan, Bryant, Colgin, and Staglin. Together in 2003, they quietly launched Favia, which stands as a reflection of the couple’s most dedicated work.

Like its sister wine, La Magdalena, our Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from select blocks at Oakville Ranch, high above the valley floor in the eastern hills of Oakville. These red, iron rich soils produce wines of great stature and profound complexity, wines that have a signature and personality all their own. It is always a deep, structured, and complex wine – regal and statuesque. The 2016 is no exception, and at present the wine is powerful but precise, with textbook aromas and flavors of Cabernet Sauvignon from this heralded site.

The 2017 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon from Favia is utterly brilliant in this vintage. Sourced from the rocky hillsides east of Oakville, this Cabernet opens to deep expressive aromas of ripe blackberries, blueberries and cassis which are joined by fresh violets, sweet spices, dusty loam, licorice, iron and even a hint of black olive that all come together and burst from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied and incredibly structured with a dense, layered mouthfeel and a core of beautifully ripe black/blue fruit character with exotic spices, violets and iron that resonate through the wine. This goes on to impress with its incredible overall balance as well as remarkable concentration and opulence, while it continues to display striking freshness all the way through the explosive finish. Andy Erickson has crafted an absolutely sensational bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that has it all and looks to be one of the top wines from the entire vintage.

Dark and winey, with intense black currant, fig and blackberry puree flavors streaming through, supported by a very polished style, with creamy cassis and plum puree flavors forming the core. Sassafras, bay leaf and loam notes stay in the background. Ends with a well-integrated gravel- tinged finish. Best from 2021 through 2036.

JEB DUNNUCK January 2020 - 96

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is much more rounded, supple, and sexy compared to the Coombsville with its spicy, blackcurrants, Christmas fruitcake, dusty minerality, and violet aromas and flavors. Rich, rounded, supple, and beautifully polished, it’s a layered, sexy wine, especially in the vintage.

ANTONIO GALLONI January 2020 - 94

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is ample, deep and super-expressive. Dark red cherry, cedar, iron, plum, espresso, licorice, white pepper, smoke and sage add to an impression of power and gravitas. Readers will have to be patient with the 2017, but there is a lot to look forward to.

JAMES SUCKLING January 2020 - 94

Lots of terracotta and plums with cherry and berry character. Medium-to full-bodied, bright and fresh. The extremely fine, velvety tannins run long and true. Savory, too. Drink in 2022 or onwards.
