Favia Wine was founded by noted viticulturist Annie Favia and her husband and wine maker, Andy Erickson. Andy’s first winemaking job was with John Kongsgaard at Newton, and then Bob Levy of Harlan scooped him up to assist at BOND. Later, he became the winemaker at Ovid, Arietta, Screaming Eagle, and Dalla Valle. Annie’s viticultural work began with David Abreu, shepherding Napa’s Grand Cru vineyards for Harlan, Screaming Eagle, Ovid, Sloan, Bryant, Colgin, and Staglin. Together in 2003, they quietly launched Favia, which stands as a reflection of the couple’s most dedicated work.

A true archetype of Cabernet Sauvignon from Coombsville, the historic, however newly ascendant, appellation in the southeast corner of the Napa Valley. We have been working with vineyards in this area for more than a decade and is now home to our winery. Its gravelly soils and proximity to San Pablo Bay combine to lend the wines an old-world, savory quality, delivered at an impressive level of concentration and depth. The long, careful maceration on the skins adds to the roundness of the tannins, even given their girth and structure.

This sneaks up on you due to the pure focus, with blueberry, açaí berry and plum fruit cruising through on a rock-steady beat, flanked by apple wood and licorice notes inlaid along the edges. A lovely floral accent weaves through at the very end. Seriously long. Best from 2022 through 2038.

From the cooler southern end of the valley, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville offers a vibrant, pure style in its blue and black fruits, sappy herbs, sagebrush, lead pencil, and rocky minerality. It’s beautiful on the palate as well, with a tight, vibrant, concentrated style, good acidity, and a focused texture that opens up with time in the glass. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and it will keep for 20-25 years.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville is understated, classy and super-polished. Graphite, black cherry, menthol, licorice and grilled herbs come together in a nuanced, beautifully expressive Cabernet that delivers the goods. A range of dark fruit, graphite, espresso, licorice, graphite, lavender and spice gradually reveal themselves, but the 2017 needs at least a few years in bottle to be at its best.

Intense graphite adds lots of lead-pencil character to the blackberries and blueberries. Full body and chewy tannins. Sandalwood and cedar come through, together with some dark chocolate, nutmeg and clove. Flavorful finish. Impressive for the vintage. Needs two or three years to come around. Best after 2022.
