Ludwigs Fine Wine

Checkerboard Aurora Napa Valley Red 2018 750 ML

$325
Checkerboard Vineyards is on the southeastern slopes of Diamond Mountain. It was started by Dennis O’Neil, a Florida property developer, and Stephen Martin, a San Francisco businessman, who bought 300 acres. Checkerboard’s flagship cabernet is made in small quantities, about 300 cases a year, and is made of the most select blocks in the vineyards. "Kings Row" is blended from many of the same lots as its $325 big brother, but this companion "2nd label" wine is meant for immediate or near-future drinking.  The estate grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The vast majority of the wine made is sold via their mailing list, but a few cases get out for retail and restaurants.

MARTHA MCCLELLAN | WINEMAKER
Martha McClellan worked making the wines at Harlan Estate from 1995 through 2000.  In 2001 she took over the winemaking and vineyard direction at Sloan Estate, the renowned Napa Valley winery, where she continues to make the wines today.  She also oversaw vinification for several years at Blankiet, while starting Levy & McClellan with her winemaker husband Bob Levy.  In 2006 she came to Checkerboard Vineyards and made the first vintage from the Aurora Vineyard site on Diamond Mountain.

"Martha has an extraordinary resume, limitless talent, and a perfectionist, nearly obsessive, attitude toward making world-class wines.”

—Robert Parker
